Congressional Appropriations Process for FY21 Set to Begin Within Weeks

Jan. 27, 2020

The Congressional appropriations process for FY21 is kicking off in the next few weeks, with the release of the President’s Budget Request expected the week of February 10th. While FY20’s budget saw growth for the majority of research funding and student aid accounts, FY21 is expected to be a leaner year for appropriations, therefore university research advocates are preparing for an intensive spring season of working with Congress to protect and grow agency budgets this year. Those participating in a scientific or education society’s advocacy meeting and Hill Day this spring, should reach out to the Federal Relations office prior to your visit. This will allow GCR to assist with messaging and coordinating visits with the Arizona delegation. We are happy to answer any questions or provide substantive feedback on messaging and federal funding background documents relevant to priorities and assist with any other Washington-related aspects of the visit.

On a related note, drivers should obtain a new driver’s license with the REAL ID designation prior to the Oct 1, 2020 deadline. Not only will this be required for domestic flight travel in the US, it will also be required to enter any federal building. Without the designation on a state ID, a US Passport will be required to access TSA checkpoints at airports, even for domestic flights, and to enter all federal buildings. More information about the process for updating your Arizona ID cards to be compliant can be found here.
