Pima County Elects Three New Supervisors After High Voter Turnout and Town of Gilbert Elects New Mayor

Nov. 17, 2020

Pima County Board of Supervisors

With Pima County voter turnout of 82.45%, three new Supervisors were elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors. By a narrow margin of just 270 votes, Rex Scott (D) edged out Steve Spain (R) to replace the retiring Ally Miller in District 1. District 2 will be represented by Dr. Matt Heinz, a former legislator and longtime community leader. TUSD School Board member Adelita Grijalva was elected to fill the seat of Richard Elias, after his untimely passing earlier this year. The three new members will join Sharron Bronson and Steve Christy on the Board. We look forward to working with this new Board and anticipate our close partnership on important regional issues will continue.

Town of Gilbert Mayor

Jenn Daniels of the Town of Gilbert announced earlier this year that she would forgo a re-election campaign, which set off a hotly-contested race for her replacement. Councilwoman Bridgette Peterson almost immediately announced her intentions to run and the race drew in political newcomer Matt Nielsen. Peterson touted her 20 years of experience serving first on the Town’s planning and zoning commission and Nielsen emphasized his private sector experience and outside perspective. In the end, it was Bridgette Peterson who prevailed with 57% of the vote. This race is consequential to the University of Arizona as the Town owns the building where our new Bachelor of Science in Nursing Integrated Health program is housed; we continue to explore further growth and potential partnerships with the Town. Mayor-elect Peterson has always been supportive of the University’s relationship with the Town and will continue to be a key advocate moving forward.
