ABOR Approves New Multi-Year Tuition Setting Policy

Feb. 15, 2023

Regents approved a new multi-year tuition setting policy at their February board meeting at ASU last week. The new policy requires university presidents to propose maximum tuition growth rates for resident tuition, academic fees, housing and meal plans in six-year cycles to the board for approval. Once approved, the board will review the approved growth rates every four years, while presidents will be authorized to set annual tuition and fees at a rate that does not exceed the maximum growth rate. Regents stated the move will reduce public confusion and provide stability regarding tuition rates and allow for market flexibility for online, nonresident and international tuition rates.

The board will still set a traditional one-year tuition and fee slate this April for the 2023-2024 school year and will also approve the new maximum growth rates for each year through 2028-2029. Moving forward, presidents and the board will announce tuition and fee rates in December of each year, providing more time for students and families to know each universities tuition and fee rates before school starts the following August.
