The University of Arizona defended the Regents’ Cup title by winning the overall competition at last weekend’s event, which was hosted by the UA at McClelland Hall. The Regents’ Cup is a tournament style event where students from the UA, ASU and NAU compete in oxford style debates and persuasive storytelling rounds designed to celebrate freedom of speech and honor participants for articulating different points of view while remaining civil and respectful. This year’s topics focused on the pursuit of liberty compared to the pursuit of prosperity, term limits for U.S. Supreme Court Justices and a federal government fairness doctrine. Judges from various backgrounds including elected officials, business, and community members, score each round of the competition and award the Regents’ Cup trophy to the university with the highest overall score. The UA successfully defended last year’s victory by winning the overall competition again this year, thanks in large part to the UA sweeping first (William Forte), second (Alicia Hall) and third place (Amy Gaudet & Ciara Tetreault) in the storytelling competition. Congratulations to all student competitors, judges, and coaches on another great event.
