GCR Update

Government and Community Relations attended Pinal Partnership Government Affairs and Transportation Committee meeting last week.

Along with many UA friends and supporters, Governor Doug Ducey joined President Robbins and Disability Resource Center (DRC) Athletic Director Pete Hughes to celebrate state support for Adaptive Athletics.

Last week, Federal Relations teamed up with the Tucson Chamber of Commerce, Southern Arizona Defense Alliance (SADA), Pima Community College, and DM50 to visit members of the Arizona delegation to advocate on important issues affecting Southern Arizona.

Tiffany Meskimen joins the Office of Government and Community Relations as Executive Associate to the Vice President.

For three weeks each year, the University of Arizona's Indigenous Governance Program hosts an intensive education session called January in Tucson.

Last week GCR hosted over 30 community leaders on Tumamoc Hill as part of the successful Community Partner Breakfast series designed to regularly connect university and community leaders so together they can identify new ways to work together for the benefit of our community.

UA Federal and State Relations jointly hosted a bipartisan group of Arizona state lawmakers in Washington, DC for the inaugural Legislative Research Summit.

The first Wildcat Welcome Walk was a great success.  In partnership with local elected officials and the Rincon Heights Neighborhood Association, GCR created a new event to help foster neighborly relationships in an area that is prominently student occupied rental homes.

Federal Relations welcomed Representative Ann Kirkpatrick back to campus on September 5. The Federal Relations team was also pleased to share the news in DC last week that UA researchers were named as awardees for the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in fundamental physics.

The Office of Tribal Relations, in partnership with American Indian Studies and Global Study Abroad, supported the 2019 Indigenous Cultural and Education Exchange (ICEE) Program.  In February 2019, Indigenous students and staff from the University of Sydney and the University of Tasmania visited Arizona.
