House Veterans' Affairs Committee Staff visits UA
The University of Arizona hosted four members of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee staff, as well as Nancy Heiser of Congressman Ciscomani’s office to discuss the many ways that the University of Arizona serves our nation’s veterans. From conducting cutting-edge research to find cures for common maladies among our veteran population, to providing world-class education for student veterans and military-connected students, the UA is proud to be #6 in the nation and #1 in the West on the Military Times Best for Vets 2023 Colleges List.
The staff had the opportunity to interact directly with students and learn about their experiences at the UA, including the opportunities afforded through partnerships with the DOD via the SkillBridge program, the work of the UA Veterans Education & Transition Services (VETS) Center and Military-Connected Benefits and Certifications office.
Staff also met with scientists across campus to learn how the UA is finding ways to provide the best care to our veteran population, whether in providing adequate training to medical professionals and physicians through the Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center; or discovering and creating breakthrough treatments for traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other physical and mental ailments.
The visit included time with the College of Veterinary Medicine to learn about the science behind service dogs for veterans with PTSD, as well as a visit with faculty of the Eller College of Management and the College of Medicine-Tucson to discuss current and potential applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare delivery and diagnosis. The staff also visited the College of Applied Science and Technology to learn about one of the top-recruiting colleges on our campus for student veterans, its world-class Cyber Operations programs, how it works with federal partners to ensure maximum transfer of military experience into college credit and provides exceptional education to our student veterans.
