Richard H. Carmona MD, MPH, FACS, is being honored with the 2021 Public Service Award by the University of Arizona Alumni Association in recognition of a career of public service and support of COVID-19 response in Arizona. 

The latest data from the National Science Foundation shows the University of Arizona ranks among the nation's leaders in the number of doctoral degrees awarded to Native American and Hispanic students.

The Tribal Leaders Summit on Oct. 21 and 22 showcased the university's research and programs that aim to serve Indigenous communities and students. Campus leaders sought guidance from tribal leaders about ways to improve those efforts.

Arizona’s three state universities will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to comply with new federal requirements, university officials announced on Friday. The University of Arizona said university employees, including student workers and graduate assistants and associates, have to show proof of full vaccination by Dec. 8 unless they have received a religious or disability accommodation.

The University of Arizona will partner with Native American nations to address the environmental challenges faced by those communities, offering expertise in environmental research, renewable technologies, and agriculture through the new Indigenous Resilience Center. "They are the ones identifying their priorities and there are indigenous scientists leading the way with indigenous students involved with the research," said center director Karletta Chief.

Last week, the University of Arizona held inaugural events to celebrate the opening of its new Center for Outreach and Collaboration in Washington, D.C. UA President Dr. Robert C. Robbins, along with other members of UA administration and representatives from government agencies, were in attendance.
